A New Chapter for Downtown Daegu's Hospitality Scene
Downtown Daegu has seen its fair share of hotels come and go over the years.
- The Novotel Ambassador Daegu, which opened in July 2008, was once a key fixture in the city center. However, it closed its doors on October 15, 2021, marking the end of an era for this prominent hotel. According to local reports, the closure was due to the expiration of the lease contract between TDA H3 Co., Ltd. and Kookmin Bank, the largest owner of Daegu City Center. Novotel had been operating in partnership with TDA H3 Co., Ltd., which leased the 9th to 22nd floors of the building. The hotel's closure was not widely publicized, and it did not file the required closure or suspension notice with the local district office, leading to some confusion about its status. As of 2024, the property remains closed, and the future of its operations remains undecided.
- Amigo Hotel, known before that as Kumho Hotel, has a storied past. It first opened in 1946 and became a longstanding presence in Daegu's hospitality scene. Despite its historical significance, the hotel faced severe financial difficulties, entering court receivership in 1993, a first for any hotel in Daegu. It ultimately closed in 2015.
- Daegu Prince Hotel had a rich history spanning over 30 years as one of Daegu's representative local businesses. However, after facing various challenges, it was ultimately acquired by the E-Land Group in 2013. Rather than continuing to operate as a hotel, E-Land Group decided to redevelop the property into a public-supported private rental housing project. In January 2019, E-Land Group announced plans to demolish the Prince Hotel and construct 'Eland PEER Daemyeong', a private rental housing complex.
These hotels' closures and transformations reflect the broader trends and economic fluctuations in Daegu's hospitality industry. The arrival of Hotel Shilla in downtown Daegu is seen as a potential turning point, promising to revitalize the area and overcome the challenges that have plagued previous establishments.
